Rocky Mountain Tours Powder Deals

September 7, 2010

Two weeks ago I was fortunate enough to do a little skiing in South America at Ski Portillo, Chile. I’m going to be honest with you. It felt a little weird heading to the airport on a perfectly hot summer day with skis and cold weather gear in tow. After all, I had just gone swimming outside about an hour and a half before leaving home. I arrived in Santiago very early the next morning, promptly took a shuttle into the mountains and arrived at Portillo around 10:00 a.m. At that point, I only had one thing to do: ski. Again, it felt strange putting on base layers, ski pants, a jacket, a helmet and, ESPECIALLY, ski boots. I walked outside, tentatively clicked into my bindings and scooted down to the Plateau lift. I was tired, it was August and I wasn’t sure I was ready to slide on snow. But everything changed with my first turn. Flying down the mountain, hopping from edge to edge, planting poles – what had all seemed very foreign to me just minutes earlier came back to me in a wave of excitement. I was skiing again and there wasn’t anything on the planet I would have rather been doing.

Since skiing four days and savoring the familiar taste of adrenaline we all crave, I haven’t been able to look back. Even today, as I write this in shorts and a t-shirt, I’m doing everything I can to not daydream about the upcoming season, the skis I want to buy and the new places I want to ski. It can’t be too far away. Places like Aspen/Snowmass, Crested Butte, Whistler Blackcomb and Jackson Hole are already seeing the white stuff sticking outside.
