Rocky Mountain Tours Powder Deals

January 26, 2011

(It's only January but many resorts in the west have already received more than 300" of snow. As of Saturday, this is Vail's 4th snowiest season on record! Above photos were taken this week and there’s still plenty of the white stuff left for you.)

Because I work in "the industry," I'm often asked which resort is the best or which is my all-time favorite. While that question might seem harmless enough on the surface, I think it's one of the most difficult of them all. Every resort out there has its own personality, ambiance, advantages and reasons to be the focus of dreams. When it comes down to it, no matter which resort you choose, you'll be surrounded by the beauty of the mountains - likely with either snowflakes or sunshine falling on your lucky face - and you'll be skiing/riding.

I bring this up because I've been lucky enough to visit a few different resorts lately and, in the process, I have been reminded of how much I enjoy discovering - and sometimes rediscovering - mountains and mountain towns. I'm actually writing this from Chamonix, France (more on that next week) and just two weeks ago I visited Telluride for the first time. Known to me as "To Hell You Ride" ever since I heard Warren Miller dub it as such 20 years ago, this is a quintessential mountain town and a beautiful place to ski and ride. With 2,000 skiable acres inbounds, seemingly endless sidecountry terrain, a vertical drop of 4,425 feet and more than 300 inches of snow each year, Telluride should be on your shortlist of resorts to visit. During my couple of days there, I was able to slide down wide-open groomers while basking in the sunshine, get some deep powder turns after hiking to the terrain for which the mountain is known, meet a ton of great locals and enjoy a beer (ok, several beers) in town.

Surrounded on three sides by the magnificent and rugged San Juan Mountains, Telluride is a historic mining town comprised of about 50 square blocks of quaint shops, bars, restaurants and a wide-selection of lodging options. For those looking for something a little more quiet, check out Mountain Village, located about 800 vertical feet above the town and connected to it via a gondola that runs until midnight. I was duly impressed with all the properties we offer in Mountain Village, including the new, boutique Lumière Telluride (try the Sushi!), The Franz Klammer Lodge and Mountain Lodge Telluride.

Like me, our Rocky Mountain Tours Mountain Vacation Specialists are mountain enthusiasts. On average, they have spent the last 15 years touring resorts and properties so that they can ask you the right questions and then match you with the perfect destination, accommodations and components such as lift tickets, equipment rental, air, ground transfers and more. In addition to talking to you about Telluride, they can tell you about more than 100 resorts worldwide and put together quotes so that you can compare one resort with another. What other company can do that? Remember, mention the DEEP Powder Discount between now and February 15 and receive $200 off your vacation package.

As they say here in France, Bon Ski!
